evaluation.

Screen printing is something that have become very content with, and I every time I use the medium I fall more in love with the process so naturally I wanted to learn new technique’s. I wanted to work with screen-printing to create a collection of work I could use in a collective manner.
When choosing artist to collaborate with it was only natural I wanted to work with people I had before, I decided to collaborate with a group of artists and contacts I had made in the past few years. The first and most obvious artist was Peter Kent, a graphic designer whom I met while studying a foundation; together we started ump, which made relations with many artists, musicians and friends. The second an illustrator called Simon Moody, I met Simon after receiving an order to print bags and shirts for a band called iwasacubscout, Simon did the artwork from them so it was only right we made a relationship in order for the products to be the best they could. The third, another illustrator called Pat Bradbury, I met pat in the first year of my degree the relation hit off right away with the same influences, I got pat to do an illustration for the band data.select.party which they bought and had printed right away by myself. From these collaborations I hoped to gain organisation, illustration, and graphic skills.
While working with my artists although I kept in contact and had close relations to them I realised that I shouldn’t have relied on them to produce work for me with in a short turn around, with all the artist having jobs and doing degrees I realised very last minute that I didn’t take into account that they would have there own projects to be working on at the same time.
I think my project had a lot of potential that I didn’t fulfil, If I was more organised I could have turned the illustrations my artists did for me into final products, I’m disappointed I didn’t have the chance to do this, but feel I will always carry on this project with the other artists.
I enjoyed learning about screen printing detailed art work and think it helped me produce some great looking work, learning about halftones made the potential of this advanced technique have so much potential and help me excel in this process which I will continue to use.
Over all I am happy with the progress I made in this project, however I just wish I had longer to make more of the information I gathered.

Posters Posters x 20

Heres my poster screen printed, I'm really happy with how they turned out, there is some over print on the purple layer, which is a bit rubbish. Its great it turned out so well and gives me confidence that my final poster will come out better.

There are 20 of these all in all, and i would like to give them away to people, once signed and numbered.

Pen vs Pixel

Here's some badges that me and joe made for our book we sold at the Leeds book fair.
our book was called Pen vs Pixel, it used the concept of two pages of the same pattern one drawn by joe then the opposite page by myself replicated by using pixels.

The Badges came in packs of two, the same pattern with the pixel version and the pen version.

halftone

Step one: Scan Drawing at 300 dpi
Step 2: Change levels about, this gets rid of any small marks, rubbings, tones and other general stuff you don't want in your image.
Step 3: Use background eraser tool, this allows me to put colour on to layers bellow my drawing without making mistakes.
Step 4: I added a green layer for the leaves and erased the parts i needed too, i did the same with a brown for the branches and houses.
Step 5: I took the brown layer and copy pasted it in to a new document, then desaturated it so it was black and white.
Step 6: Im going to convert this into a bit map for the reason that i can have more than one shade of brown in my poster when i screen print but using the same tone brown, this works a bit like cross hatching.
Step 7: Bitmap using halftone screen using a frequency of 80 and at an angle of 45 degrees
Here you can see the effects of bitmaping
Step 8: I copy and paste the bitmap back into my image.
Step 9: ive now made the bitmap layer brown to see how it will look but will need to change it back to black when i screen print it.
I add a background for the final image but when i screen print the final one i want to play around with different coloured backgrounds.

Talita Hoffmann

Talita Hoffmann's work is stunning i fell in love with her illustrations straight away. there dreamy and use nice colours.

Merijn Hos

Merijn Hos is an illustrator from the Netherlands,
The main characteristics in his work are at first sight long-legged characters with high-heel shoes and big hairdo and freckles, a lot of colours and abstract psycadelic landscapes. But when it comes to content, you will find a lot of elements such as ghosts, life and death, friendly and cute expressions and hidden messages. A lot of the work reflects on issues in todays society and everyday interaction between people in terms of escapism, organised confusion and friendship and loyalty.

Nickolej Villiger

Illustrations by Nickolej Villiger, using halftones to create tone even though hes not screen printing them, he really hits the nail on the head with that 60’s style.

Amy Ross.

I love the style of these drawings by Amy Ross which borrow from traditional botanical illustration. She describes them as implausible hybrid creatures, created by morphing animals with branches and mushrooms.

Brief

I've chosen an easy and short brief for my artists:

Create a design based on the theme growth, Your interpretation of the theme can be rendered using: graphic design, illustration, type, which we will then print on to t shirts and bags, you don't have to limit your self to one design.

How To Write An Effective Design Brief and Get The Design You Want!

this could be really helpful for writing the brief for my designers.

Don't Panic ump is here

Taken from don't panic who also have the same concept.
At the heart of the pack find the Don't Panic Poster where a rotation of established and unknown, up and coming artists design around an issue that affects culture across the world. On this site find an interactive online magazine to further explore the issue raised on the poster where you can contribute to the debate with text, graphic design, illustration, photography, animation, music and film for all to see.

Artists, designers and illustrators battle it out every month to design ether poster or package. this is where I want head but i don't want the submissions to be public, only selected artists i know.

How to do halftones

Ive been reading up on a Process called halftones,
What is a Half tone?

Halftone is the reprographic technique that simulates continuous tone imagery through the use of dots, varying either in size or in spacing. 'Halftone' can also be used to refer specifically to the image that is produced by this process.
Where continuous tone imagery (film photography, for example) contains an infinite range of colors or greys, the halftone process reduces visual reproductions to a binary image that is printed with only one color of ink. This binary reproduction relies on a basic optical illusion—that these tiny halftone dots are blended into smooth tones by the human eye.

I'll be creating halftones in photoshop so i think its time i should learn how it is achieved. time to watch loads of youtube video tutorials, these really are a great way to learn thumbs up to the 21st century.
